Emergent Transcendence

I saw the Johnny Depp film, "Transcendence," a sci-fi thriller about "a scientist's drive for artificial intelligence that takes on dangerous implications when his consciousness is uploaded into one such program". The film got poor reviews, but it really touched me. I felt saddened feeling that our collective consciousness is not ready to "transcend", never mind the implications here via technology.

The film expressed the conflict between accepting and positively utilizing AI, which I'd like to think of as CAI "collective advancing intelligence", and our need to destroy it. It's been our nature to destroy what we fear and do not understand. We're just not emotionally equipped yet. It used to be monsters from out there—the other—that we had to destroy, now it appears to be what's in here—our own advancing intelligence! Unawakened intelligence, without the essential presence of the heart or soul, has created so much violence and destruction. That's where both my grief and hopefulness lie—grief at the damage we've caused to so much on earth and hopefulness that we're waking up, thanks in part to our global connection via internet and technology.

Maybe we do have to reboot and shut down the whole internet system, and therefore our lives, like in the movie, but I don't think so. I was very touched by the last scenes of the film, that the seeds for healing the planet AND advanced intelligence CAN evolve together through the intelligence and conviction of the loving heart. I'm waiting for that 100th monkey or 51% trigger to awaken the collective to OMG!!

In any event, I think this is an important movie for reflection and find it interesting that the trailer has been viewed by 8.6 million people! Johnny Depp rocks!
